Yarn and yardage
Example yarn: Lily Sugar'n Cream The Original (100% cotton; Worsted (#4)); 2.5 oz / 71 g = 120 yd / 109 m per ball. This is one example, not a required brand.
- Lilac: about 70 yd / 64 m (1 ball; about 60 yd are used)
Substitutions: any yarn in the same weight class (Worsted (#4)) that matches the designed gauge below will work. Check the label for weight and yardage per ball, and swatch before you start.
Gauge
- Designed gauge: 16 stitches x 18 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in sc with a 4.5 mm hook.
- Measure it unblocked, as worked and relaxed. Blocking is not needed for this piece; if you wash your swatch, measure again after it dries flat.
- Swatch: ch 17, sc for 18 rows, and measure the square. It should be 4 in / 10 cm across and tall.
- If you get more stitches than the designed gauge, go up a hook size; fewer, go down. The gauge is worked out from this pattern's stitch counts and finished size (it is a designed gauge, not yet confirmed by test makers).
